We’re friendly, approachable PHP developers in Preston. When out and about at business events we go to, we sometimes get asked questions like “what is PHP?” “What do PHP developers do exactly?”
Many people have never heard of the term, yet they are visiting web pages every day that use PHP behind the scenes.
For someone who is not technical, but has an interest in the type of code that we use here at A6 Software, this is a very brief introduction to what PHP is in simple terms…
PHP is another language
That’s right, no wonder it’s not something most people come across every day. It’s what you call a ‘programming language’, and is one of the most widely used online today.
Our clients have no need whatsoever to understand a single bit of this language, they leave it all to us, so if you don’t want to know anymore you can stop right here! Otherwise, keep reading.
Meanings of PHP
PHP used to stand for personal home page. These days it means PHP Hypertext Preprocessor and the letters are a backronym (an acronym that is made to fit an existing phrase).
What is PHP used for?
The language (or code) of PHP is used all over the world for web development and also as a general purpose programming language.
The code that we use is read and interpreted by a ‘PHP processor’ on the web server. The web server, in simple terms, is the computer that helps deliver web content to you through the internet.
Combined, this process cleverly creates the websites and applications we see when we visit a website, based on what the PHP language says.
What can it do?
The use of PHP essentially gives us lots of functionality.
We use it for a wide variety of client projects in our Preston office, for both local clients and those further afield.
Just some of the many creative uses for PHP include:
- Mobile apps
- WordPress plug-ins
- Project management tools
- Building an online community
- Developing Facebook applications
- Content management systems
- Carrying out surveys
- Building databases
- Web applications
We’re on YouTube
It’s always good to keep up to date with the latest developments and happenings in the world of PHP. You can often find our Managing Director, Chris, at a PHP event or conference.
Chris is also a regular on YouTube and has a channel teaching other people Symfony 2, a form of PHP we’re specialists in. Chris is approaching 1000 subscribers and regularly receives emails of praise and thanks for his content.
We keep things simple for our clients
We may know a thing or two about development and PHP, but when you work with us, we explain everything in a simple, easy to understand way.
If you have any questions about PHP or have a project in mind, give our Preston office a call or drop us an email and we’d be happy to have a chat.
